Windsurfer is the original windsurfing class in Australia. There is a resurgence of the Windsurfer class following a strong fleet of 85 at the 2017 Windsurfer Nationals here at Balmoral Sailing Club and has grown to a national racing fleet of 116 in 2024.

 

Buying a Windsurfer LT is one of the cheapest ways to get into windsurfing or sailing. Windsurfer LT is suitable for male and female, all ages, all weights and all abilities and can be sailed in most conditions from 5-25+ knots depending on the level of experience.

The Windsurfer LT is a light, fast, extremely versatile board and great for the whole family to learn on and sail. One can progress from beginner through to being an expert at racing on the same board. The adult rig is 5.7 square metres and there is an option of buying a smaller junior rig (2.9 m) which is perfect for kids to learn on, and a 4.5 m sail for intermediate sailors. It’s a fantastic family sport.

You can progress to enjoy weekly social club racing, advance onto the travelling windsurfing regattas and then onto more competitive racing at the State and National titles. Events include course racing, marathon, slalom and freestyle (tricks) so there is always plenty to learn, practice and enjoy! It’s a fabulous form of exercise to keep you fit and toned but so much fun you don’t notice the exercise!

Lessons and hire can be taken at Balmoral Water Sports Center, and if you are an experienced windsurfer we have a club windsurfer one design board that can be booked in advance for free if you want to find your feet before buying a board. Ideally we encourage everyone to have their own boards eventually.

All windsurfer classes welcome to race. We race 9 months a year and there is a windsurfer class point score, followed by a BBQ and refreshments on the balcony most weeks. Olympic windsurfer class welcome. We have a number of sailors who competed at worlds and podiumed last year and a number of past Olympians, world and national champions currently racing at the club. We also have a few foilers who occasionally race.

There are onsite lessons, hire and coaching at Balmoral Water Sports Center. Junior members can use one of the five club windsurfer LTs. There will be a focus on junior development this season.
