Balmoral Sailing Club

Aero

There are 30 RS Aeros at Balmoral Sailing Club. We race on Saturdays with a mid-week meet up on Tuesdays and twilight sprint racing on Thursday.

Most boats are stored at the club, racks are usually available for new members.

The RS Aero is light with a hull weight of 30kg. The construction is epoxy glass and carbon composite. The flat panel deck and chined hull help save weight in construction and add stiffness. The boats are manufactured in the UK by leading boat builder, RS Sailing.

The sail comes in four sizes: 9,7,6 and 5. The sail is made of dacron which allows its shape to be controlled by the natural stretch in the fabric. The rig is unstayed, the mast drops into the hull. The cunningham and outhaul controls are led to each side deck. The sail is part-battened with a square top which allows the top half of the sail to be de-powered in fresh winds. The mast comes in two sections for easy transport and storage. The mast and boom are light and strong carbon composite.

The light weight makes easier to move on its dolly and to lift into club racks. The boat is easily transported on roof racks. See video.

In 2019 World Sailing equipment committee reviewed the RS Aero, Laser, D Zero and Melges 14 and overwhelmingly recommended the Aero. You can read more about it here.

If you have good experience in dinghies or windsurfers we can arrange a test sail.
